Wicker Park Periodontal & Gum Disease Treatment Chicago

Healthy Gums – Healthy Body

You know that your gums are crucial for holding your teeth in place, but did you know that they also affect the rest of your body? You see, your gums are considered mucous membranes and all mucous membranes are direct portals to your bloodstream. That means that when your gums are infected, infection has access to the rest of you! In fact, studies show that inflammation and infection in your gums can cause all kinds of trouble: Heart attacks, strokes, hard-to-manage diabetes, inflammation, osteoporosis, and even cancer. Plus, more obviously, gum disease can lead to bad breath, tooth loss, and bone deterioration. We take the health of your gums very seriously and recommend at least biannual cleanings to keep your teeth bacteria-free, and regular checkups to screen for the very first, hard-to-detect symptoms.

//What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an infection in your gums caused by a buildup of plaque on your teeth. When this plaque remains in contact with your gums it causes a reaction in your gums that in its early stages is called gingivitis.
This is problematic because the majority of gingivitis cases go undiagnosed. If gingivitis is not treated immediately, it will progress and turn into periodontal, or gum disease. Just because you received a clean bill of health at your last check up, doesn’t mean that you aren’t susceptible. Everyone is!  And gum disease can start very quietly and without noticeable symptoms. Lots of our patients tell us they have had no bleeding or tenderness and are surprised to know that they have a problem.  Even without bleeding or tenderness, gums can recede, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay, abscesses, and tooth loss. If you do experience any of the following symptoms, please contact us right away:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Puffiness or tenderness of the gums
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Loose-feeling teeth

//How We Can Help

Our periodontal protocol begins with deep cleaning of your teeth and under your gums to remove plaque and tartar buildup. Once you are clear of this bacteria-laden biofilm, we send you home with Perio Rinse to keep your teeth clean and protect them from further plaque attacks. If your gum disease is severe, we offer the Periochip, a biodegradable chip that is placed in the deepest gum pockets. This chip contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate, an antibacterial shown to be an effective and safe way to reduce pocket depth and continue your healing at home.
For those who are getting implants placed to replace missing teeth, we often recommend the periochip be placed to protect those precious gums from infection.
