oral healthEveryone knows that they should brush and floss their teeth. It’s ingrained in us from an early age. But like most things, a detailed reminder every now and then can’t hurt to make sure you’re still getting the best care for your smile. At my Chicago dental office, we’d like to highlight a few things to refresh your mind on the importance of proper oral health.

Are You Using the Right Stuff?

Different people have different mouths, and different mouths have different needs. The good news is there are a multitude of options available for everyone.

  • Toothbrush – Choosing the right toothbrush is key, and we’re not just talking about picking the best color. When it comes to size, we don’t want the head to be too big, and we don’t want it too small. Just like Goldilocks, we want it just right. Look for one medium in size. The bristles can also vary. Unless otherwise told by your dentist, choose one that has soft bristles to avoid damage to enamel and gums.
  • Toothpaste – There are so many toothpaste options available — some for whitening, others for tartar control, even more for sensitivity. Talk with your dentist to determine what your specific needs are and select one based on those needs.
  • Floss – Everyone needs floss, but not everyone needs the same floss. If floss is easily wiggled between teeth, regular, unwaxed floss should be perfect. However, if your teeth are tighter together, select a waxed floss that easily slides in between each tooth.

Are You Using Your Stuff Right?

Now that you’re armed with the appropriate toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss, it’s time to use those tools to get your mouth healthy. Follow these tips:

  • Brush every day, two times a day, for two minutes each time
  • Use small, circular motions and scrub each surface of each tooth
  • Floss once a day in between each tooth and up under the gums

Are You Seeing Your Dentist?

Seeing your dentist twice a year isn’t some rule we made up just because we like to see you (although that last part is true!). Bi-annual visits help detect any concerns like cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer early when they’re still easily treatable. Regular dental appointments also allow you to discuss any concerns you have with your dentist. It’s the perfect time to talk about ways to enhance your smile with teeth whitening, veneers, or cosmetic bonding.
